Why is the quality of the counseling relationship so important in vocational counseling and what is expected of the counselor in this relationship?

• The quality of relationship matters since the client is coming to the counselor to get a perspective since they are strugglinf to find one. They are nervous and confused regarding what vocation to choose which is why it is important for the counselor to be approachable and empathetic towards them. The client comes with a lot expectations to the counselor and that is why developing an effective relationship is important to gain the trust of the clients and help them choose the right career path.
• A counselor needs to have knowledge of various professions and career choices and able to claerly explain to the client based upon their interests and aptitude which could work best for them.
• They should be able to take a person's education level, work history, personality, interests and skills into account and suggest careers that match his or her background and abilities. Their goal is to match people with jobs that will give them the greatest balance of financial payoff and job satisfaction.
• The counselor needs to be genuine and non judgmental. They need to understand individual preferences and make career plans accordingly.
