Find the pH of a 0.170M HClO2(aq) solution. For HClO2, Ka=0.011.

Solutions

Expert Solution

For the given reaction -

                        HClO2 (aq) + H2O (l) <------------> H3O+ (aq) + ClO2- (aq)

       I(M)           0.170              -                            0                0

       C                  -x                                            +x             +x

       Eq            (0.170-x)                                      x                x

Therefore -

                Ka = 0.011 = (x)(x) / (0.170-x)

By solving the above equation - x = 0.038 M

Hence - x = [H3O+] = 0.038 M

Therefore - pH = - log [H3O+] = - log(0.038) = 1.41
