how can the diameter and hight and type of packed effect the prcess in scrubber column

Solutions

Expert Solution

Diameter:- The decrease in diameter of the scrubber column increases the scrubbing efficiency as the decrease in diameter results in the increase of droplet concentration per unit volume of the scrubber. But as the decreasing of diameter proceeds, it limits the span of droplets with a large initial release angle which forces the droplets to hit the scrubber wall to form a liquid film, and caused significant liquid coagulation. This phenomenon significantly reduces the liquid surface area which results in the reduction of scrubbing efficiency.

Height:- The increase in the height of the scrubber increase the contact area of the two streams which results in the increase of scrubbing efficiency. But as it is increased further the vapour flow rate might increase and carry out liquid with it which results in inproper operation of scrubber that further results in decrease of scrubber effucency.

Type of packing:- It should be very open in design to minimize pressure drop while still maintaining high surface area. Spiral pac-type packing will accomplish this. Alternate packing is also suitable to enhance this. The type of packing will effect on temperature, pressure drop, scrubbing efficency etc.,
