a. What is meant by countercurrent operation?

b. Why is a packed bed absorption column column operated countercurrently?

c. How would the performance change if the column was operated cocurrently?

Solutions

Expert Solution

a.) Countercurrent operations means when two stream are contacted with coming form opposite direction and they take sufficient time to mix with each other and our desire process is done. Countercurrent operations are more effective than other process because it having so much contact time so that stream can intimate with each other is very well and efficiency of process will increase.

b.) Packed bed operation are done by countercurrent operation because it having packing which are used to sustain the liquid and flow very slowly downward due gravity and gas stream fed from bottom of the tower so that it goes upward without any external power requirement and they take lot of contact time between packings so that operation will be effective. Packings are very important parts of packed bed which are used so many types of packing which may lead operation very efficient and effective. Countercurrent operation may give better perfomance of packed bed.

C.) If we use cocurrent operation then it will take always with the same type of stream concentration they didn't contact with new concentration stream and they will not get proper mixing which reduces the efficiency of column and we have to do other extra power for pumping if we use cocurrent and there is so many factors are involved why we are not using cocurrent operation in column.
