Estimate the total cost for furnishing and installing standard size brick (6.75 bricks/SF) in a running bond pattern for the above referenced building 300 feet long, 200 feet wide and 12 feet high. Calculate only the brick units and the mortar required.
a. Total area of wall openings: 650 SF
b. Brick waste factor: 5%
c. Mortar required per 100 SF: 7.2CF/CSF
d. Mortar waste factor: 40% e. Productivity Rates: 12.0 Mason-hours/1000 brick and 13.0 Laborer-hours/1000 brick
f. Wage Rates: Masons – $28.00/hr and Laborers - $22.00/hr
g. Material Costs: Brick - $615/M and Mortar - $140/CY

Note – CSF stands for 100 Square feet
M Stand for 1000 numbers
Step 1: Calculation of total contact area of wall
Area of long walls = 2 x 300 x 12 = 7200 SF
Area of short walls = 2 x 200 x 12 = 4800 SF
Less openings = 650 SF
Total area = 7200 + 4800 – 650 = 11350 SF
Step 2: Calculation of Required quantity of bricks
Total Area = 11350 SF
Bricks per SF = 6.75
Brick Quantity = 11350 x 1.125 = 76612.50
Add Waste @ 5% of 76612.50 = 3830.63
Total Quantity of bricks required = 76612.50 + 3830.63 = 80,443.13 say 80,443 bricks
Step 3: Calculation of Required quantity of Mortar:
Total Area = 11350 SF
Mortar per CSF (1 CSF=100SF) = 7.2 CF
Mortar Quantity = 11350 x 7.2/100 = 817.20
Add Waste @ 40% of 817.20 = 326.88
Total Quantity of Mortar required = 817.20 + 326.88 = 1144.08 cubic feet
Since 1 CY = 27 CF
Total quantity of mortar required in CY = 1144.08/27 = 42.37 cubic yards
Step 4: Calculation of Required man-hours of mason:
Productivity Rates Mason = 12.0 Mason-hours/1000 Bricks
Total bricks to be installed = 76612.50
Required Mason Hours = 76612.50 x 12/1000 = 919.35 Hours
Step 5: Calculation of Required man-hours of labor:
Productivity Rates Labor = 13.0 Laborer-hours/1000 Bricks
Total bricks to be installed = 76612.50
Required Labor Hours = 76612.50 x 13/1000 = 995.96 Hours
