Bloodhounds can have a sense of smell that is either average or excellent. They also differ in activity level; they are either enthusiastic tracking dogs, or lazy couch-sitters. There are two genes involved: one controlling activity level and one controlling smell. A male from a true-breeding line of enthusiastic hounds with an excellent sense of smell was crossed to a female from a true breeding line of lazy hounds with an average sense of smell. Their F1 progeny all had an excellent sense of smell, but were really lazy. (use capital and lowercase letters to indicate dominance). Copy the below template, and paste it into your answer.

A. What are the genotypes of the P generation? Male parent ______ Female parent______________

B. What is/are the genotypes of the F1 generation?

C. What are the genotypes of gametes that the F1 generation dogs would make if the genes assorted independently?

D. If an F1 individual mates with another F1 individual, what fraction of their offspring (F2 generation) would be expected to be lazy and have an excellent sense of smell? Assume that the genes assort independently

Prosimians (lemurs, lorises, and tarsiers) use their sense of smell to find food, have a pronounced snout, are quadrupedal, and have a long tail used for balance. Apes have a flattened face, no tail, use their sight for finding food, and are quadrupedal. Humans are bipedal, use sight to find food, have a flattened face, and have no functional tail. Monkeys have a flattened face, use their eyesight to find food, are quadrupedal, and have a functional tail. If the...

2. A researcher believes that smoking affects a person’s sense of smell. To test this, he takes a sample of 25 smokers and gives them a test of olfactory sensitivity. In this test, higher scores indicate greater sensitivity. For his sample, the mean score on the test is 14.8 with a standard deviation of 2.4. The researcher knows the mean score in the population is 16.2, but the population standard deviation is unknown. (a) What are the null and alternative...

2. A researcher believes that smoking worsens a person’s sense of smell. To test this, he takes a sample of 25 smokers and gives them a test of olfactory sensitivity. In this test, higher scores indicate greater sensitivity. For his sample, the mean score on the test is 15.1 with a standard deviation of 1.2. The researcher knows the mean score in the population is 15.5, but the population standard deviation is unknown. (a) What are the null and alternative...

3. In mice, genes for albinism (a), chronic inflammation (i), and reduced sense of smell (r) are linked.  You initially crossed a mouse that is homozygous dominant for all three traits with a mouse that is homozygous recessive for all three traits.  You then crossed several of the resulting F1 offspring to mice that are homozygous recessive for all three traits.  You observe the following phenotypes in the offspring: colored, healthy, normal smell sense 41 albino, chronically inflamed, reduced smell sense 45 colored,...

You can smell the odor of cooking onions from far away. You can smell the odor of cooking onions from far away. As onions are heated the volume of the gas causing the smell increases. The pressure of the gas which causes the smell is very high. The random movement with high velocities leads to diffusion of the gas particles. Since gas particles are very small, they can penetrate through large volumes of air.

Short Answer 10 When individuals recover from coronavirus, they ultimately regain their sense of smell. You wish to test whether this is because of the regeneration of the olfactory epithelium. How would you test this out - describe three experiments.

A slugging average of .500 or higher is considered a sign of an excellent player. Suppose a player had 4 triples and a batting average of .300 in 400 at-bats (batting average = hits/at-bats). Determine a combination of singles, doubles, and home runs that gives this player a slugging average higher than .500. Still using 400 at-bats, what is the maximum number of singles this player could have with a slugging average between .500 and .700? Justify your answer.

Compare and contrast taste and smell. For example, why is it that taste appears to have a small set of basic qualities, while smell does not? You should explain the basic theories underlying the perception of each, including how specificity coding vs. population coding apply to each. You should also include in your discussion how the two combine to produce flavor.
