You can smell the odor of cooking onions from far away. You can smell the odor of cooking onions from far away. As onions are heated the volume of the gas causing the smell increases. The pressure of the gas which causes the smell is very high. The random movement with high velocities leads to diffusion of the gas particles. Since gas particles are very small, they can penetrate through large volumes of air.

Suppose you are viewing some red light coming from a galaxy far, far away. The wavelength of the red light is expected to be 6300 nm if the relative speed of the galaxy with respect to your world is zero. That is, if the galaxy and you are not moving toward or away from each other. However, you observe a wavelength that is longer than expected. How would you interpret this observation?     Recall the frequency dependence of the Doppler shift:...

Apparently a shark can smell blood up to a quarter of a mile away. How does smell travel in water? It would seem strange that if you drop ink in water it takes ages to dissipate so how can the individual particles of a smell travel so far and apparently so fast?

Consider a spacecraft that is far away from planets or other massive objects. The mass of the spacecraft is M = 1.5×105 kg. The rocket engines are shut off and the spacecraft coasts with a velocity vector v = (0, 20, 0) km/s. The space craft passes the position x = (12, 15, 0) km at which time the spacecraft fires its thruster rockets giving it a net force of F = (6 × 104 , 0, 0) N which...
