1 ton of TNT can produce 4.6 x 109 J of energy. A chemist wants to know how to obtain this much energy from acetylene (C2H2) and Oxygen (O2). How much acetylene and Oxygen would be required? Provide the name and structure of the TNT

Reaction between Acetylene and Oxygen: ΔH= -2510 KJ

Solutions

Expert Solution

TNT abrivated as Tri Nitro Tolune and the structure is as follows.

1 ton = 907.185 g

1 ton of TNT produces 4.6 * 10^9 J

Acetylene and Oxygen reaction as follows,

2 C2H2 + 5 O2 -------> 4 CO2 + 2 H2O

2 moles of C2H2 reacts with 5 moles of O2

mass of Acetylene = 2 * 26 g/mol = 52 g of C2H2

mass of O2 = 5 * 32 g/mol = 160 g of O2

Total mass of the reacatnas = 160 + 52 = 212 g

from the given data,

Energy released from C2H2 and O2 combination, E = 2510 Kj

i.e., 212 g of mixture can produce 2510 Kj of enegy

4.6 * 10^9 J of energy requires 212/(2510 * 10^3)*4.6*10^9 g of mixture

                                                      = 388525.89 g

212 g of mixture contains 52 g of C2H2

388525.89 g of C2H2 contains 52/212 * 388525.89 g

                                                       = 95298.803 g of C2H2

212 g of mixture contains 160 g of O2

388525.89 g of mixture contains 160/212*388525.89 g

                                                        = 293227.086 g of O2
