Look up “heat pump” on the Internet. What can you find out about the coefficient of performance (COP)? What is the cost? Would a heat pump be a good investment in the area where you live? (Don’t guess. Work out some numbers.)

Solutions

Expert Solution

Heat Pump :

Heat Pump is a device which applies external work to extract an amount of heat Qc from cold reservior and delivers heat QH to hot reservior

COP :

Coefficient of performance (COP) for a heat pump is the ratio of energy transferred for heating to the input electric energy used in the process.

COP = QH/W

= QH/(QH-QC)

Cost:

Cost of a Heat pump Brand Americal Standards is aprrox. $7,790

Consideration:

Heat pump should be installed in a area where Heating loads should not be much larger.

For example , In Canada , heating loads are larger than cooling loads, if heat pump is sized to match heating load , it will be too large for the cooling requirement . This may reduce the performance and its ability to provide dehumidification in summer.

A heat pump should be selected in a manner that would meet 80 to 90 percent of the anual heating load and would have a balance point between 0°c and -5°c.
