Explain what is meant by formal operational thinking. How does it differ from operational thinking? How does the educational system require and perpetuate this mode of thinking? What, in your opinion, are strengths and weaknesses of formal operational thought?
ormal operational stage is the last stage of Piaget's theory which is characterized by abstract thinking and hypothetical reasoning. This stage begins at 12 years of age and continues till adulthood.
The operational thinking is the third stage of Piaget's development theory and is in the middle childhood, the time where one develops logical thought. Children become more specific and concrete in their thoughts.
The main difference is that during operational thinking they do not develop concepts of abstract things such as honesty.
Our education system indeed requires encouraging and perpetuating this mode of thinking by teaching children how to think rather than what to think, making students study through Practical knowledge that would help in development of this type of thinking.
The weakness of formal operational thought is that during adolescence many physical changes also take place and they start to think more about themselves which leads to ego centricism.
The strength is that this type of thinking is important for long term planning.
