List and explain 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of the merit/civil service system. What might be expected to happen when a local government moves away from the merit system and towards at-will employment?
A merit system is a system which uses the ability of individuals in hiring rather than their political connections. This system makes the process of recruiting fair and unbiased. This also helps in people who are eligible to get the jobs get them and hence the organisation will have capable employees. This helps in improvement and development of the organisation . The main disadvantage of using merit service system is that the employees might lack unity and more competitve environment might be created as every employee will try to prove themselves. The organisation will become competitive and employees will not be willing to work in teams.
When a local government moves away from merit system , the system might get corrupted with all the employees being related or influenced by political people and hence organisations will face problems with their quality and development. There will be a lot of inequality and many eligible and qualified students will be left unemployed.
