pick one of the transition element and talk about the element's physical, chemical properties, preparation, discovery, and industrial application of that element

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution. The transition elements are those elements having a partially filled d subshell in any common oxidation state.
Ex:Nickel (Ni). It is generally exist in +2 oxidation state.(Common oxidation state)
Discovery:Nickel was first isolated and classified as a chemical element in 1751 by Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, who initially mistook the ore for a copper mineral.
Physical properties:1) Nickel is silver in colour.2) Nickel is magnetic, hard, malleable, and ductile.3) MP is 1455oC,
BP is 2913oC
Chemical properties:1)Corrosion: highly resistant to rusting and corrosion2)Reactivity with Oxygen: Nickel metal does not react with air under ambient conditions but in the finely dispersed state nickel it ignites spontaneously in air.

3)Alloys: Stainless steel and copper-nickel alloy tubing.
4)Compounds: Used for electroplating and to make nickel alloys
Applications.1)Nickel is used in coins (because it remains shiny) and in strong magnets (as an alloy with other metals). 2)Nickel compounds are used to color glass green.3)Nickel is used in batteries, including rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries used in hybrid vehicles.
