Microwave laboratory questions:

1) Give brief explanation about the Gunn diode, Gunn oscillator, PIN modulator.
2) What is the common resonator type in the microwave technology?
3) Why Gunn oscillator instead of cavity resonator?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Gunn Diode - Gunn Diode is a TED(,Transfer Electron Device) consist of only single type of semiconductor i.e. N type. It utilizes negative resistance characteristics which is used to generate current at microwave frequency. With the application of voltage current starts increasing but at particular point it start decreasing that point is called threshold point or peak point. After this point current decreases and create negative resistance which is used for amplifier and oscillators. It reaches to lowest point called valley point after that it starts increasing again.

Gunn oscillator- Gunn Diode are used to build oscillatores, which is used to generate frequency from 10GHz to THz. Basically it usea negative resistance characteristics to generate frequency. When DC bias is applied to Gunn Diode then current starts increasing and after particular point it starts decreasing, if we increase DC bias further it reaches to maximum low point called valley point which is the region of negative resistance used to generate sustained oscillation.

PIN Modulator- PiN modulator is used for amplitude modulation and pulse width modulation at microwave frequency range. It uses Pin diode for operation. It is a high speed current controlled typed of device. It is used to modulate Gunn oscillator frequency.

2) some common resonator are,

a) Co-axial resonator.

b) Dielectric Resonator.

c) Crystal Reaonator.

d) Ceramic Resonator.

e) Cavity Resonator. etc.

3) Gunn Diode is popular method for generating high frequency, it uses transfer electron device, negative resistance which is used to generate oscillation. While cavity resonator is a hollow metallic box uses electromagnetic waves (Radio waves,) narrow band for frequency generation. Therefore Gunn oscillator are preferred over cavity resonator.
