Wind power generation design for renewable energy:

A typical generation system will consists of a rotor, a DC current source or a AC current source.

The components are : Drive shaft, main gearbox, generator , high speed shaft , rotating blades , the rotor blades , tower support , hub and rotating bearing.

A) Rayleigh Wind Regime : Rayleigh - Betz wind machine is used to calculate the average value of annual power of a wind turbine. The machine is a ideal wind machine operating at a Betz power coefficient of 0.53.

How the average annual power is found out: cases are considered.

1) An ideal machine with finite power and finite cut out speeds.

2) Real machine operating in a variable speed mode.

3) Real machine operating at constant speed.

B) Power factor : A power factor of 1 is desirable in controlling the electric power utilization. This factor 1 in short represents efficiency. But generally power factor 1 is difficult to reach and hence the power factor are lower than 1. 0.53 power factor was mentioned in Betz machine.

C) To start a wind turbine a speed of 2m/s is required. And the max out speed are 10- 15 m/s. To stop you will have to make the speed come 0m/s.

D) I will give you a very practical data. Suppose a 600 KW turbine is present with us.

Power generation annual - (365days* 24hrs/day* 600Kw) gives me 15*10^5 Kwh.

A power company operates three power generation plants. One is a wind plant, and the other two consume a combination of Fuel 1 and Fuel 2, emitting carbon dioxide in the process. In addition, all three plants require maintenance. The amount of fuel consumed (in Mg), maintenance required (in person-hours), carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted (in Mg), and power generated (in MWh) per day of operation is as follows: Maintenance Fuel 1 Fuel 2 CO2 Power Plant Required Required Required Emitted...
