Police chiefs are those officers who manage police departments. All of the officers and other personnel in the department report to the chief. They need to respect the position of a police chief and should be taking instructions from the chief. Chiefs are responsible for coordinating the training, promotion and advancement of their staff. The chief should be providing ongoing training for the police personnel. Managerial skills for police chiefs is similar to those in any bureaucracy or company.Different police chiefs have different managerial styles.

The best leadership style for a police chief would be transformational leadership. Transformational leadership has a “people-centered approach” . A transformational leader aims to inspire, empower and motivate one’s team. The leader and the subordinate share visions and goals for the organisation.Such a leader encourages innovation and creativity in achieving those goals. Transformational leaders give importance to each individual’s unique needs, skills and motivations. They often have an “open door” policy to facilitate open communication.
