Describe how to determine training needs and select the appropriate training methods.
Training needs of an employee can be assessed using Training Needs Analysis (TNA) In TNA, the organization identifies training and development needs of its employees so that they can know the how much appropriate skill set the employee posses to do the work efficiently. TNA is process that involves a complete analysis of training needs required at various levels of the organization.
The following are the different types of training methods:
1. Technology-Based Learning
This includes basic PC-based programs, Interactive multimedia - using a PC-based CD-ROM, Interactive video - using a computer in conjunction with a VCR, Web-based training programs etc.
2. Simulators
Simulation refers to the imitation of real life experiences. For example, astronauts, defense personnel undergo simulation training before going for the real mission.
3. On-The-Job Training
This is the most common and popular training method. The employee starts working from the first day of the job. The employees are provided with manuals for gaining knowledge of about a task. This method involves a combination of observation, explanation and practice. Trainers delegate job roles and duties to employees. They supervise the employees at each stage of work. This will motivate the employees to learn more. Some employees may find this method very stressful.
4. Coaching/Mentoring
This is one- on -one training method from an experienced professional. This training method is usually followed immediately after the formal process to extend their learning about the job and improve their skill set. This method includes hiring professional coaches, setting up mentoring pro
5. Lectures
This refers to classroom method. This helps in imparting a huge information in a short period of time.It is considered as the least effective training method because of the lack of interaction between the trainer and the trainee.
6. Group Discussions & Tutorials
This also happens in a classroom or conference room. Before the implementation of new programs, group discussion would allow the employees to have a clearer idea about the program. This is a better training method than lecturing as it facilitated interaction among the employees and gives an opportunity to voice out their concerns.
7. Role Playing
Role playing method provides situation for the employees that allows them to act out issues that could occur in the real life situation. Negotiation and teamwork skills are given more focus in this type of method.Role playing wont be a good method for people who don´t feel comfortable performing in front of a group of people.
8. Management Games
Here real life issues faced in the workplace are simulated. Some examples of management games are Computer simulations of business situations, bard games that simulate a business situation. Problem solving skills are given more focus in this type of method.
9. Outdoor Training
Outdoor training is perfect for developing teamwork skills. Some examples include adventure training or a quite getaway. Outgoing employees may enjoy this than introverted employees.
Outgoing and active participants may get the most out of this form of training. One risk trainers might encounter is distraction, or people who don´t like outdoor activities.
10. Films & Videos
Films and videos can be used with other types of training methods. But this method also lacks communication if it doesn't follow a discussion. The trainer should select videos that would garner the attention of the trainees.
11. Case Studies
Case studies method involves presenting case studies to the trainees that initiates an analysis and discussion about real workplace issues. This helps in building analytical and problem solving skills and helps in improving the practical knowledge.
The trainer should carefully assess the training needs of the employees and choose the appropriate training method accordingly.
