1.a.) The heat of hydrogenation of cyclohexane is -120kJ/mol. The heat of hydrogenation benzene is -208kJ/mol. Is the heat of hydrogenation of benzene more or less than you would expect
1.b.) This is the value different from the expected?
Heat of Hydrogenation is inversely related to the stability of the compound it means that the more stable compount will have less heat of hydrogenation whereas the less stable compound will have more heat of hydrogenation.
The negative sign in the heat of hydrogenation merely represents that the reaction is exothermic.
Here, the heat of hydrogenation of benzene is -208kJ/mol which is more than the heat of hydrogenation of cyclo hexane -120kJ/mol. (negative sign merely represents that the reaction is exothermic)
The heat of hydrogenation of benzene is more than the expected value since we know that benzene is more stable than cyclo hexane since it is stabilised by resonance whereas there is no such renoance stabilisation in cyclo hexane so the value of heat of hydrogenation of benzene is different from that expected.
Benzene was expected to have lesser heat of hydrogention than cyclo hexane due to greater stability.
