In a distillation, which compound would distill last and why? a.)Butanol and Butanamine b.)Cyclohexane and Benzene

In a distillation, which compound would distill last and why? a.)Butanol and Butanamine b.)Cyclohexane and Benzene

Solutions

Expert Solution

Distillation is a separation process for mixture of two miscible liquids which is based on the boiling point differences of the components in the mixture .

a) Boiling point of butanol is 117.7 °C & boiling of butanamine is 78 °C

Butanol & butanamine can be separated by distillation when the low boiling component butanamine will be distilled out first from the mixture and higher boiling component (butanol) will distill last.

b) Boiling point of benzene is 80.1 °C & boiling of cyclohexane is 80.7 °C

Separation of benzene and cyclohexane is a challenging processes in the chemical industry. because boiling point difference is only 0.6◦C .

They cannot be separated by conventional distillation process. They can be only separated by Azeotropic distillation
