The age group of 12-18 marks one of the most sensitive and challenging stage of human development. ADOLESCENCE. This stage is marked with tremendous shifts in the entire being of the individual. All the aspects of his/her personality are being shaped and the individual is gradually inching closer to his early adulthood phase.
Physical: The adolescent is in her pre-adulthood stage. With the setting in of menarche, the body overhauls itself with primary and secondary characteristics. A 16 year old girl is in her later adolescene. Her secondary sexual characteristics must be well pronounced by now.
Cognitive: Adolescents indulge in complex thought process and formal operational mental manipulation. They have a clear view and opinion of things, constructs, people, government, societal norms, etc. They are bold to voice their opinions and dont really wish to fit in the societal norms. they are defiant of rules which expect obedience with no direct logic. MAny a times adolescents lack the sensitivity and maturity to tolerate opposing views. They have an evolving concept of morality and ethics and is not bifurcated in strict right and wrong categories.
Adolescents in their later stage usually think about their future and the plan of action to achieve them. They start getting career oriented. They have a global approach and various pressing issues have a sentimental appeal for them.
They may also have love interest and may have partners towards whom they have a close affinity /bond. They also may develop intimate relation with their partners.
Emotional/Social: Adolescents do develop close ties with their friends and partners. They usually tend to drift away from their familiy if they are not nurtured well. Friends and peer group have a massive appeal for an adolescent. Approval from this peer group is essential for the adolescent and this approval determines the way the self esteem of the adolescent is shaped . This also determines how well the adolescent judges one self on the scale of efficacy.
Socially the adoelescent is exploring himsel and his immediate environment. he is wanting to carve his own identity. They immensely love and respect their freedom/independence and their privacy. Many a times they end up being mindless and impulsive in their decision making .
Emotionally, due to the hormonal balancing, adolescents will be found to be moody and irritable. They are yet not able to regulate their emotions efficiently and hence might find themselves at the war front most of the times.
