How has the media positively/negatively affected large groups and organizations? also Is deviance caused by nature or nurture?
Media is responsible for creating a outgroup homogeneity bias. For example, we tend to attribute a stereotype to a particular group if the members of that group display certain behavior. Media is partly responsible for projecting these behaviors. People undergo confirmation bias when they get information from the media and thus the stereotypes are reinforced. Media has a huge role in constructing public beliefs and images of certain people or organizations. Especially when the audience don't have a lot of knowledge about the incident or person, they rely on the media to gather more information. So, if the media is biased, the audience become biased too.
I believe deviance is mostly caused by nature. Though certain people have genetic dispositions, it is the society that shapes the criminals. Most of the deviant behavior arise from the demands to meet the basic needs ( need for food, money etc). Scarcity of resources will lead to an inequality in the society and some people use deviance to gain these resources. Personality disorders like antisocial personality disorders are also responsible for creating deviance. But it is a psychiatric disorder affecting a small percentage of the population. Most of the people engage in such behavior due to the social inequalities and disparities.
