The long term memory as described as psychologists comprises of an unlimited capacity store that can retain information over lengthy periods of time. By this, they refer to the fact that this unlimited capacity can even store this information for a lifetime as well, if needed. In fact, it is said to be consisting of various types of memory within itself, including: procedural memory, semantic memory, & episodic memory.

Some features of the long term memory are as follows:

1. It is believed to be limitless, i.e. it can store endless information throughout lifetime.

2. As a result of practice (skill honing) certain things remain in the long term memory, even though they may not have been repeatedly practiced.

3. Information in the LTM is stored and retrieved as per the need.

Functions of the LTM include storing and organizing information of various kinds. The strength includes its unlimited capacity, unlimited usage possibility, and its determination by frequency and recency of use. The limitations however, include the fact that forgetting is an essential component that comes with the LTM, which is often explainable in terms of its actual process and cause.

Examples include, learning a skill such as swimming or cycling,
