Expert Solution

gproblem solving is a cognitive process. solving a problem by insight means that solution suddenly comes to ones mind. such a method was observed when many researchers themselves experienced it. when archemedes had to identify the material(lead or gold) used for the crown of the king he couldnt solve it all at ones. he needed the vlume of the crome for this and there was no formula for calculating its volume. suddenly while taking a bath he decided to calcule volume of water with and without crown using formulas and then subtract them so as to get the volume of crown which would help in identifying the material used.

solving a problem by insight involves four stages.

  1. learning about the problem- here you learn about the actual problem and understand it competely by constructing mental images which would help you solve the problem later.
  2. incubation- it depends on the difficulty of the problem and is not compulsary. in this stage we do not move actively towards the solution of a problem. here either you think of the problem unconsciously or in a loose conscious way.
  3. production of insight- it occurs mainly when we think of the problem again with our conscious mind or in some cases may also occur when we are not involved with the problem. some cue in the environment triggers the soluton in this stage.
  4. verifying- here we actually perform or try the solution and verify if the instinct was correct or not.
