An engine is coupled to a rotating drum by a friction clutch which has a single plate faced on each side with a ring of friction material. The inner and outer diameters of the friction faces are 224 mm and 300 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction is 0,3. Other data available are: axial pressure on plate = 1350 N ; engine torque is constant at 40,7 N.m inertia of engine equivalent to a flywheel of mass 20,7 kg; and radius of gyration k=0.305 m. Drum mass is 54,5 kg; radius of gyration k=0,38 m; total friction torque in bearings = 6,8 N.m; and the clutch is engaged when engine speed is 500 r/min and the drum is at rest.

Assuming uniform wear conditions, find the engine speed at which the clutch ceases slipping and the total time for the drum to reach 500 r/min.

Tom, the only steel drum manufacturer in Narnia, can sell a single drum for $30. However, for every extra drum he wants to sell, he is forced to reduce the price (for all his customers) by $2. The total fixed costs in his workshop are $15, and the variable cost of the first drum produced is $25. For each extra drum thereafter, the cost drops by $5 up to, and including, the fifth drum. After that, the cost of each...

The figure shows three rotating, uniform disks that are coupled by belts. One belt runs around the rims of disks A and C. Another belt runs around a central hub on disk A and the rim of disk B. The belts move smoothly without slippage on the rims and hub. Disk A has radius R; its hub has radius 0.439R; disk B has radius 0.240R; and disk C has radius 1.69R. Disks B and C have the same density (mass...
