300 words explain: Disorders of the large intestine What is one example of a disorder that can effect the large intestine? What effect does the disorder have on the large intestine? Can the disorder be prevented? Why or why not?
Large bowel or colon or large intestine begins at the region
just at or below the right waist and continue from small intestine
and up the abdomen
Major function is to absorb water from indigestable food and
excretion
Disorder that affect large intestine includes
Ulcerative colitis
Colon cancer
Crohn’s disease etc.
Ulcerative colitis or UC is a disease that cause inflammation or
sores called ulcers in lining of rectum and colon
It is included in a group of disease called inflammatory bowel
disease
Most common symptoms include
Anemia
Severe tiredness
Weight loss
Loss of apetite
Joint pain
Types of Ulcerative colitis
1.Ulcerative procitis-inflammation in an area close to anus.rectal bleeding is the only sign
2.Proctosigmoiditis-inflammation seen in rectum and sigmoid coloc.Bloody diarrhoea,abdominal cramps are the signs
3.Left sided colitis-inflammation extends from rectum up through sigmoid descending colon.Bloody diarrhoea ,unintented weight loss are the signs
4.Pancolitis-affect entire colon .Bouts of bloody diarrhoea seen
5.Acute severe UC
UC can be life threatening.Inflammation causes diarrhoea hence making the colon empty more often and then the cells die and some are off, sores started to be seen causing ulcer.
It cannot be prevented fully but to some extent, changes in diet
influences,
Avoid carbonated drinks
Avoiding high fibre food
Drinking more liquids:Drink plenty of fluids as diarrhoea is caused
during UC,fluid and electrolytes are lost.So to keep
hydrated,fluids are taken.
Eating smaller meals:Eating small meals means to take 5/6 small
meals rather than 3 large meals.
Nutritional and vitamin supplements advised.
Exercise is good to reduce stress.A proper exercise plan can help to an extent.
