Fresh orange juice contains 12.0 wt% solids and the balance water is fed to an evaporator for
concentration process. The juice that enters the evaporator is concentrated to 58 wt%
solids. However, the volatile constituent of the juice somehow can escape with the water,
leaving the concentrate with a flat taste. It is suggested for the stream of fresh orange juice
to by-pass the evaporator at certain fraction and mixed with the evaporator product stream to
achieve the desired final concentration, which is 42.0 wt% solids.Calculate the amount of product produced and the fraction of the feed that by-pass the
evaporator. State clearly your assumption and basis of calculation.
Propose another possible way to preserve the volatile ingredients that provide the taste of the
concentrate and thereby obtain an even better tasting product. List down the advantages
and the drawbacks of your suggestion.

Fresh orange juice containing 10 % solids and the balance water is fed to an evaporator...
Fresh orange juice containing 10 % solids and the balance water is fed to an evaporator to produce final product of concentrated orange juice containing 40% solids. A fraction of the fresh juice bypassed the evaporator to insure fresh taste. The juice that enters the evaporator at 10% is concentrated and leaves the evaporator at 60% solids, and the evaporator product stream is then mixed with the bypassed fresh juice to achieve the desired final concentration of 40 % solids....

Fresh orange juice is largely water and solids though much of the flavor comes from volatile organics present in small amounts. In producing concentrated orange juice the trick is to drive off the water but not to loose the organics that produce the taste. If fresh orange juice can be thought of as containing 12.0% solids with the balance being water (ignoring the small amount of organics), concentrated orange juice contains 42.0% solids. Initially a single evaporation process was used...

A beverage is prepared by combining fresh juice (12% solids) with sugar and water to achieve a final concentration of 8% juice solids and 4% sugar. The beverage is pasteurized continuously in a regenerative heating/cooling plate heat exchanger. The juice first enters the pasteurizer at 500 kg/h, 20°C through the regeneration section, where it is being warmed up to 65°C by the outgoing hot product. The juice then flows through the heating section, where it is heated to a target...

The label on a 4-quart container of orange juice states that the orange juice contains an average of 1 gram of fat or less. A gas contains 55.0 wt% methane, 5.00 wt% ethane, 35.0 wt% ethylene, and the balance water. If 100.0 kg/h of this fuel is to be burned with 30.0% excess air, what is the required air feed rate? in kmol/h What is the required feed rate if the combustion is only 75.0% complete? in kmol/h

An ice chest contains 6 cans of apple juice,8 cans of grape juice,7 cans of orange juice, and 4 cans of mango juice. Suppose that you reach into the container and randomly select three cans in succession. Find the probability of selecting three cans of grape juice.

A liquid mixture contains 60 wt% ethanol, 5 wt% of a dissolved solute, and the balance water. A stream of this mixture is fed to a distillation column operating at steady state. The streams emerging from the column have equal mass flow rates. The top stream contains 90 wt% ethanol with no solute. Solve for all the mass fractions of the bottom stream and solve for the 3 mass flow rates

You separated a mixture containing 20 wt% CH3OH, 35 wt% C2H5OH, and the balance water into two fractions. You then drew and analyzed samples of both product streams and reported that one stream contained 42.2% CH3OH and 29.3% C2H5OH and the other stream contained 16.5% CH3OH and 45.2% C2H5OH. After examining the report your professor indicated that the results must be wrong and asked you to repeat the stream analyses. Show why the professor is right

The exit stream of a beer fermentation system (F) contains ethanol, water and fermentation solids and has a mass flow of 1200 ton/day. This stream is fed to a separator from which has to outlets: a stream of 300 ton/day of solids (S) and a stream (A) that is fed to a distillation column. From the top of the column, a flow of 750 ton/day of beer containing 12.5% ethanol and the balance of water is released; the bottom flow...

A tank originally contains 100 gal of fresh water. Then water containing 1 2 lb of salt per gallon is poured into the tank at a rate of 2 gal/min, and the mixture is allowed to leave at the same rate. After 10 min the process is stopped, and fresh water is poured into the tank at a rate of 4 gal/min, with the mixture again leaving at the same rate. Find the amount of salt in the tank at...
