One mole of N2 and 3 moles of H2 are placed in a flask at 397°C. Calculate the total pressure of the system at equilibrium if the mole fraction of NH3 is found to be 0.258. The KP for the reaction is 4.31 × 10^-4

Solutions

Expert Solution

N2 (g) +   3 H2 (g)   <----------> 2 NH3 (g)

1 mol        3 mol                            0 mol

1 - x           3 -3x                              2x

mole fraction of NH3 = 0.258

mole fraction of N2 = (1-0.258) x 1 / 1 + 3 = 0.1855

mole fraction of H2 = (1-0.258) x 3 / 1 + 3 = 0.5565

ratio : N2   :    H2   :   NH3

     0.1855     0.5565    : 0.21

        1               3              1.13

PH2 = 3x

PN2 = x

PNH3 = 1.13 x

Kp = (1.13x)^2 / x (3x)^3

4.31 × 10^-4 = 1.282x^2 / 27 x^4

x = 10.5

total pressure = 53.8 bar
