a) Lateralization or assymetry of the brain function is the tendency for certain neural functions or cognitive processes to be specific to one hemisphere not the other one. This means one of the hemisphere is dominant over other in its function.
b) assymetry is important for the cortical function because we have two hemispheres which controls different activities of the body. If one hemisphere is dominant over the other it means the cortical functions on that function is much faster and stronger. In these cases depending upon the percentage of dominance there is difference in the brains function. Is the left hemisphere is dominant the right ear has more capacity of hearing. Like wise we may be right handed or left handed, it is due to this assymetry if brain as one hemisphere is more active. The brain activites fall under different hemispheres. So according to the dominance the sensations, decision taking capacity etc will be dominant to the respective controlled area.
