The "old brain" is conseidered as the "wired for survival". The oldest and the innermost region of the brain is the "brain stem". It is responsible to control the most basic functions of our life, which includes breathing, attention and motor responses. It begins from where the spinal cord enters our skull and forms the medulla. Brain stem is basically the extension of spinal cord and it includes medulla, the pons, the thalamus, and the reticular formation. These are the other parts of the old brain and are involved in processing behavior and emotions. For example, the reticular formation plays an imporant role in walking, eating, sexual activity and sleeping; thalamus is important for sleep as it shuts the incoming signal, allowing us to rest; damage to cerebellum can result in difficulty in walking, keeping balance, holding hands steady. The primary function of the brain stem is to regulate the basic functions of life and motor functions, whereas lymbic system (medulla, the pons, the thalamus and the reticular formation) regulates our memory and emotions.
