Prepare a logical design for a process used by your organization (any healthcare). You may select something that you work with directly, or a hypothetical process. Your logical design should cover the three aspects of the database management system. Compare and contrast this with the physical design of the process and describe how the logical design and physical design affect one anther.
Proper database design and the logical design is applicable to create a process for the organization, the healthcare segment. It is crucial to practice and operate a formal approach to gathering data requirements and modeling of data. This modeling effort requires a model formal approach to the discovery and identification of the data entities and data elements. Data normalization is a big part of the data modeling and through the database design. The logic should cover the three aspects of the database management system, and it means a data definition language, data dictionary, and data manipulation language.
Background of Logical Design
A logical design is a premise of data or the system pertains to an abstract representation of inputs, data flows, and outputs of the system. These are conducting through the modeling, graphical techniques, and abstracts of the actual system. A right logical design helps to observe, analyze and understand the data or database management from a business perspective, while the physical design shows it how the database is arranged on the direct access towards the storage devices. In the background of the scenario, the logical design is the healthcare industry-specific and it involves the models related to the design.
Database Management System
The database management system and the three components are data definition language (DDL), data dictionary, and data manipulation language (DML). DDL is a Data Definition Language which is widely used to define the data structures in healthcare data management. For example: create a table and list of patients details, alter the table are instructions in the SQL. DML is an essential factor and the Data Manipulation Language which is used to manipulate the existing data itself. For example: insert the existing patient records, update the details in the database, and delete the unwanted information or remove are instructions in the SQL base. The database management is crucial in the healthcare and the whole three factors require to manage and these require the use of data dictionary, it is a set of information that describing the format, contents, and structure of a specific database and the relationships between its main elements, that used to control the access to and manipulation of the existing database.
Logical Design and Physical Design
In healthcare, the Oracle Healthcare Data Model includes both logical and physical design. In the logical design, the Oracle Healthcare Data Model provides an efficient predefined logical model in all means. This data model defines the entire business entities and their direct relationships in order to provide a clear understanding of the existing healthcare business and the data requirements for the data warehouse. For ease of use, the Oracle Healthcare Data Model is partitioned into main three high-level logical categories which are divided into functional subject areas. Whenever the designing aspect progress in the Healthcare data warehouse, one can implement some or all of these categories and in the subject areas. This logical model defines the administrative, clinical, and operational entities, direct attributes, and relationships between the entities. The logical model always ensures the naming and conventions have been carefully chosen to represent the database or domain in the language and vocabulary that is recognizable to the user.
In the physical data model, the Oracle Healthcare Data Model provides a predefined physical data model and it includes Oracle Healthcare Data Warehouse tables, reference tables, database sequences, physical files, manual and computers, derived tables, and OLAP dimension and cube views. Or the breakup of the data includes 880+ tables, 11,460 non-key columns, 1380+ industry-specific measures, 20 pre-built clinical KPI's, 1 pre-built data mining model, and 4 pre-built OLAP cubes.
From the above model, the conclusion is that the logical design of a system is an abstraction of data flow, inputs, and outputs. Whereas, the physical design is associated with the actual data points like actual inputs and output processes of the system, or the total absence of abstraction. In other words, the logical model information resources include the data and process components. In the physical model components, it describes how it will be implemented in the system, here in the Healthcare system.
