what are the strategies that social workers may use to become advocates for social change through cultural competence?
In order to bring about social change through cultural competence, where cultural competence would be addressing the requirements of the reproductive health of people of colour or les-bian people or the people who are transgenders. Individuals who are more culturally competent would be able to serve the youth and the diverse population in a better manner. Not only differences in ways of acting but there would be differences in communication, behaviour, perception as well as judgment of a person who is culturally competent and this would be significantly different t from a person who is biased.
Culturally competent people would not only acknowledge and be sensitive towards the different cultures, but would also respect these differences and realise that these differences are what make people unique. For such people, the world is seen in the same eye, with no biases while serving or treating any person who hails from a culture different from theirs. When a social worker wants to bring about change in the society , he requires to :
- recognise the different patterns of behaviour
- acknowledge the inequities faced by different people of the society.
- create programs so as to reach different members of the society.
- create awareness among all strata of the society sbout the inequalities faced by other members of the society.
- engaging in community partnerships.
- public discussions
