Compared to anaerobic fermentation, aerobic metabolism

a. makes more ATP and produces it faster
b. makes more ATP but produces it slower
c. makes less ATP and produces it faster
d.makes less ATP but produces it slower

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer option b) makes more ATP but produces it slower.

Aerobic respiration takes place in the presence of oxygen, while anaerobic takes place in the absence or unavailability of oxygen. Aerobic respiration produces more ATP than anaerobic. When oxygen is present pyruvate ( produces from glucose in process known as glycolysis) metabolises into carbon dioxide as a byproduct and release huge amount of ATP in compare with anaerobic. During glycolysis 2 ATP is released which is common in both aerobic and anaerobic. But in the present of oxygen (aerobic respiration) more ATP is generated after this. But it takes time, much more than anaerobic. For faster mode of energy is produce during anaerobic cycle . Due to this, under stress our body muscles shifts from aerobic to anaerobic respiration for faster need of energy.

Incorrect option

Option a - makes more ATP and produces faster - aerobic respiration makes more ATP but anaerobic is faster.

Option c - makes less ATP, and produces it faster. - anaerobic respiration produces less ATP and it is faster too.

Option d - makes more ATP but produces slowly - aerobic respiration makes more ATP and takes more time .
