Evidence-based management

Decision making is tremendously influencing an organization and it is very crucial in determining the future of an organization. Evidence-based management is a management technique to use the best available scientific evidence in managerial decision making. Here according to this method, a manager uses evidence in formulating strategies, long term plans, etc. Evidence-based managers are not taking decisions on the basis of instincts, personal experiences, etc instead they analyze academic literature to generate evidence regarding best practices that help in decision making. The managers need to possess familiarity with academic literature in order to use evidence-based management. Evidence-based management philosophy helps a manager in reducing the errors in judgment and mental biases associated with decision making. Evidence-based management improves the quality of decisions taken in an organization. Along with ensuring quality, it helps the organization to have a transparent system of decision making.

The interest in searching and analyzing scientific literature is an inevitable part of moving towards evidence-based management. The skill for thinking critically is the essential element of evidence-based management. Along with scientific literature, managers could also use organizational data and figures, etc for facilitating evidence-based management. Asking questions is the first step in the process of evidence-based management. Then the managers have to search for various evidence from different sources. Now the managers must critically evaluate the evidence collected from different sources. After that, we will convert the evidence into decisions. Then the managers will implement and evaluate the taken decisions.
