You are the director of public relations for a mid-sized organization that is poised for rapid growth within its industry. Your supervisor, the vice president for marketing, suggests that you outsource some of the public relations activities to free you up for some strategic planning. Your supervisor asks for your advice, but he/she will make the final decision. What would you tell him/her are the pros and cons of outsourcing? ANSWER MUST BE 20 LINES LONG

There are many different reasons for the organization to outsource the PR and it depends on many factors like focusing on core competency, technological development, global competitiveness, and cost reduction.

Pros of Outsourcing

  1. Focus on your business responsibilities: In the business world most of the companies outsource any activities that are not directly related to their core competency and strengths
  2. Solidify your marketing strategy and target audience: it solidifies the marketing and PR campaign and it gives a fresh and unbiased look which is always an advantage.
  3. Outsourcing saves time & money: Outsourcing not only saves time and money but it gives you time and resources to focus on your core strengths and handle other tasks as well.
  4. Generate more media attention for the business: Credible PR agencies should generate more media attention, they know what they are doing and they would be able to craft a different story to media.
  5. Operational efficiency: The PR agencies offer a higher level of efficiency and they can deliver it with high quality because they are already a specialized and efficient provider of those processes.

Cons of Outsourcing

  1. The Outsourced PR agencies do not know your organization’s culture: one of the biggest drawbacks of outsourcing is that they don’t know your organization as you do so it is not easier to create ideas and campaign which align with the organization’s culture.
  2. Outsourced PR can be costlier: for some organizations, the benefits of hiring outside PR firms do not outweigh the rewards of the campaign.
  3. Skills & Knowledge: Outsourcing firms do not share the same knowledge and passion for the organization as regular employees, all the skills will stay with the agency so ultimately you want to develop your team and capabilities
  4. Periodic contract: the PR agencies are usually contracted so until the contract period is up, so your marketing and PR campaigns are stuck
  5. Security risk and compliance: in the age of data protection, it is essential to remains cautious whenever using data of your customer. Access to confidential and personal data could be inappropriate.
  6. Reduced quality and control: the outsourced agencies are usually motivated for the profit rather than quality, it can expose your organization
