What features of the inguinal canal reduce the likelihood of herniation?
Conversely, what conditions predispose to the development of a hernia?
Thanks!
Inguinal hernia are characterised by herniation of the abdominal
content mainly intestine through the inguinal canal.
The inguinal herniation is caused due to weakness of lower abdomen
muscle.
The lower abdomen is the most common site of inguinal herniation
due to its weak anatomical structure. The muscular and fascial
layer that forms the lower abdomen generally contribute to the
weakness of lower abdomen.
weakness of the transversalis fascia which forms the lower abdomen
also makes it prone imto herniation.
Also the passage of vas deferens and spermatic cord in males and
round ligament in female is associated to increased risk for
inguinal herniation.
At the time of birth the opening of inguinal canals is closed. But
one or both the openings may sometimes fail to close and remains
open resulting in increased risk for inguinal hernia.
A strong lower abdominal muscles and fascia prevents inguinal
hernia. Lower abdominal muscles can be strengthened through
exercises.
Also people who do not have any openings in the inguinal canal have relatively lower risk to inguinal herniation.
