My reaction to energy therapies is negative. I am skeptical of
these therapies.
Energy therapies are based on the assumption that if energy flows
freely through a patient’s body, he will have good spiritual,
emotional, and physical health. It is also called Biofield therapy
and scientific research has found no empirical evidence of the
existence of energy fields on which this therapy is based on. Since
I believe in the scientific method it matters to me if I don’t
fully know how they work. I also do not believe in these therapies
because these are unscientific belief systems, are traditional, and
are related to supernatural energies.
The placebo effect is that a person receives energy therapy and is
persuaded that it will help him. It is the confidence in the
treatment and the assurance that makes the receiver of the
treatment likely to get better. A placebo works not because the
treatment or the drug administered has any property that will
affect the illness but because the ill person believes in that
treatment.
Scientists disregard the positive effects of energy therapy as the
effect of the placebo effect. We need scientific proof because of
several reasons. The use of alternative therapies that might depend
on the placebo effect may stop a person from receiving holistic
health care from primary health providers, prevent/manage chronic
diseases, and get a higher level of comfort. Besides, going to a
physician who is scientifically trained provides access to a
healthcare provider transparency to the health history of the
person, lowers overall health costs, and helps catch health issues
early. If required, the health care system based on scientific
evidence will refer the patient to other specialists, and
ultimately reduce his hospitalization.
For energy therapy or any other alternate system, we need
scientific proof because otherwise not only will a patient avoid
science-based medical intervention but may be subjected to negative
outcomes. These negative outcomes may be related to the safety of
the therapy, interactions with conventional medicine, and most
importantly delay in science-based treatment that can risk the life
of a person.
