Crew Resource Management was born from a recommendation from the NTSB after United Airlines Flight 173 crashed after fuel exhaustion while the crew was distracted with an inoperative landing gear light. Ever since then CRM is constantly changing and getting better with training. How do you define CRM in your own words? Why is it important? Can it be used outside of the cockpit in a non crew environment?
answer-
I would define CRM as an area of training and knowledge to crew member and people related to safety of every people in the flight in aviation industry. CRM is the area where crew member can use their non technical skills to make sure any human error like the flight 173 due to crew was distracted does not cause any harmful and devastating effect on flights.
CRM is important because It helps in promoting safety of flights and improve skills of crew members like Interpersonal communication, focus on rationale decision making, be a leader in the cockpit. CRM teach crew members to work like a team who is aware of the situation and make solution if any problem they face. With help of CRM, crew members can overcome communication barriers and make sure they are not distracted from thier job and lead flight to safety.
Yes, I believe that CRM can be used outside of the cockpit in a non crew environment where people who either wanted to be crew in aviation industry or already are crew can get training from institution like simulation training to learn about CRM and how they will deal with such situation if they face actual issue like flight 173 in real life. CRM is like training to improve skills and knowledge of people in relation to flight safety which can be developed outside training.
