Describe the James-Lange Theory verses the Two-Factor Theory.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JAMES-LANGE THOERY AND TWO-FACTOR THEORY
American psychologist William James(1884) and Danish physiologist Carl Lange(1887) proposed the oldest theory of emotions known as JAMES-LANGE THEORY |
Stanley Schachter and Jermone Singer proposed the TWO--FACTOR THEORY in 1962 |
The theory states that emotions is equivalent to the range of physiological arousals caused by external events | The theory suggest that emotional states contains 2 important components, there are: 1.PHYSIOLOGICAL 2.COGNITIVE |
The person to feel some emotions, he/she must experiences BODILY RESPONSES like increased respiration, high BP, high heart rate or sweaty hands. Only after this bodily responses a person is said to experience some sort of emotions | When an emotions is felt, a physiological arousal occurs and the person uses immediate environment in search of any emotional cues in labeling the physiological arousal |
EG: YOUARE WALKING ON A DARK SCARY ROAD AT NIGHT ALL ALONE AND YOU HEAR SOME STRANGE VOICE AND YOU FEEL LIKE SOMEONE IS FOLLOWING YOU. YOUR HEART BEAT INCREASES, YOU FEEL STRESSED AND TREMBLING OF YOUR HEART, ETC. YOU NOTICE THESE PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES AND INTERPRET THEM AS YOUR BODY PREPARING FOR A FEARFUL SITUATIONS. AFTER THIS YOU EXPERIENCE FEAR | EG: YOUARE WALKING ON A DARK SCARY ROAD AT NIGHT ALL ALONE AND YOU HEAR SOME STRANGE VOICE AND YOU FEEL LIKE SOMEONE IS FOLLOWING YOU. YOUR HEART BEAT INCREASES, YOU FEEL STRESSED AND TREMBLING OF YOUR HEART, ETC. YOU REALIZE THE FACT AND TRY TO LABLE IT ACCORDING TO THE SITUATION AND YOU THEN ENCOUNTER THE EMOTIONS |
