Not Really an essay. Filtration is a relatively non-selective process. Make a list of the specific substances that pass through the filtration membrane. Make another list of the substances that do not. Are there any advantages for using a non-selective process in producing filtrate? Are there any disadvantages?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Urine formation begins with glomerular filtration, which is a non-selective process in which fluids and solutes are forced through a membrane by capsular hydrostatic pressure.

Water, sodium ions, bicarbonate ions, nitrogenous waste, nutrients and glucose do pass through the filtration membrane.

Hemoglobin, a protein found on erythrocytes , albumin, platelet and blood cells not normally pass through the filtration membrane.

The benefits of the non selective filtration process are that it disposes of excess fluid, solutes, and metabolism byproducts and that it serves to detoxify the system by disposing of chemicals identified as foreign.

Notably, pharmacotherapy with diuretics, such as the thiazides and loop diuretics, is based on the principle of detoxification.

In general, the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is relatively stable. Water content and ingredients are maintained by varying the amount of water and solute reabsorbed by the different segments of the nephron beyond the glomerulus.

Drawbacks includes massive non selective filtration of certain substances lead to some disorders.
