Make a list of the specific substances that pass through the filtration membrane. Make another list of the substances that do not. Are there any advantages for using a non-selective process in producing filtrate? Are there any disadvantages

Solutions

Expert Solution

in the above list the substances can pass freely.

the above list are the substances that can't pass through.

One can clearly observe that as mass and radius increases , less is the chance of that molecule to cross the filtration membrane.

Advantages of non selective process of producing filtrate;

Urine formation starts with glomerular filtration, which is a non selective process in which fluids and solutes go through a membrane due to hydrostatic pressure.

The factors responsible for the permeability and selectivity of the glomerulus are presence of negative charge on basement membrane
and the pore size of the glomerulus membrane.

The filtration membrane of the glomerulus is of thus thousand times more permeable to water and solutes than other capillary membranes.

Because of this small positively charged molecules will pass through it freely. Such as - small ions like sodium and potassium pass freely but, haemoglobin and albumin have almost no permeability.

Thus glomerular filtration is non selective as , though all substances must move through the glomerular membrane i.e. plasma and dissolved substances but no blood cells and large blood proteins.

Nevertheless the advantages of non selective method of filtration, there are some disadvantages like sometimes haematuria or proteinuria occurs.
