One should always follow his/her passion while deciding the career. If the work does not make you happy that means you are doing something wrong. There are few career choices which are ever green in nature. If the occupation which we want to stick to is accountant then we have multiple roles as accountant but the best one to start with is "Charted Accountant".

Charted accountant validates the financial books of their clients and carries a lot of other roles and responsibilities for society. When I completed my schooling I somewhere knew that I am gaining my interest towards the subject "Accounts". But it is not limited to the course that we study during our high school or as part of commerce. It is a vast syllabus. After gaining interest in this subject I started talking with my parents, teachers, and seniors and connected with various "Charted Accountants" on LinkedIn and other social media and after discussing this with everyone, I decided that I want to be an accountant. My journey started from there. Deciding a career is easy but to stick to it, to work hard for it is really difficult. I started my journey with being consistent, hard work and dedication towards my career. Regular studies and revision helped me a lot. I read about how to proceed further to become a charted accountant. So the first step is to register the CPT entrance exam at ICAI. This exam happens twice a year, one in June and other one in December, during registration we will need to fill the form and all the necessary details and give the exams. This level consists of subjects such as Fundamentals of accounting, Economics, Quantitative aptitude and mercantile law. After clearing exam, I will be registering myself for intermediate level (IPCC). This comes with two groups and each group consists of seven subjects. Some of the subjects in this level are accounting, business laws ethics & communication, cost accounting and financial management, taxation, advanced accounting, auditing and assurance, information technology and strategic management. I can give both the groups together or individually. I am planning to give exam individually so that I can concentrate more on the subjects. Once you register for IPCC, the material will be delivered for home. One gets 9 months to clear IPCC at their attempts and one can also skip their attempts if they feel they need more preparation. After clearing IPCC I will be starting my article ship which is for 3 years and during these years I can prepare for my final attempt too but to give the final need more preparation. After clearing IPCC I will be starting my article ship which is for 3 years and during these years I can prepare for my final attempt too but to give the final attempt I will need to complete 2.5years of article ship. Final level includes financial reporting, strategic financial management, advanced auditing and professional ethics, corporate and allied laws, advanced management accounting, information system control and audit, direct tax laws and indirect tax laws. Then after clearing the final level and completing the required formalities I will get the degree of CA and unique membership number under which I will be able to practice as Charted Accountant and find jobs too.

Coming down to the skills, the skills that are required are:

  • Drafting skills to be good at writing and framing things
  • Global awareness to know what is going around the world
  • Oral communication to communicate well with everyone
  • Technical skills to work on day to day responsibilities
  • Management skills to manage the roles
  • Hard work, patience, focus, time management, multi-tasking
  • Charted accountant should follow some ethics such as integrity, professionalism, confidentiality of the client, no biased nature, due care or professional competence, etc.
  • Tasks includes validating and examining the financial books of an organization if the data entered is correct or not, if the client is trying to manipulate the data then try to rectify it.
  • Now coming to the salary, the average salary that charted accountant earns is Rs. 25,00,000 per Annum ($35000-$40000) which goes up to Rs. 70,00,000.
  • One can grow in the same field and become chief finance officer too. I would definitely want to work for the top companies such as Google, Microsoft, Deloitte, etc.
  • I have connected with few people on LinkedIn and social media and made them my mentor. They are helping me to achieve my goals as they are already charted accountant, they know the path and they will be the best ones to guide me with my career. I will be taking training from them.

I will definitely work hard for my career and become Charted Accountant one day.
