What are the goals of performance appraisal? How can we make a link between performance appraisal and other HR functions?
Help supervisors to closer monitor their subordinates and do
better coaching work
Motivate employees by giving feedback on their way of doing
things
Provide reference data for management decisions relating to rise in
merit, promotions , transfers, dismissals, etc.
Improve organisation's development by identifying potential promoters and identifying development needs Establish a baseline for personnel decision making and research
Employee performance evaluations are particularly suited for
identifying individual training and educational needs. After all,
an appraisal is meant to determine how well a person performs his
or her job. Deficiencies arising from the lack of individual
knowledge or skills are appropriately used to identify traditional
training needs; skills are traditionally used to plan educational
activities of employees leading to individual promotion or other
future career moves
The results of the assessments influence decisions concerning
employee training and development (T&D)
Dismissals cause movement outside the organisation, leading to an unplanned vacancy. They represent extreme disciplinary measures and should not be taken lightly .Dismissals should be used as the last resort even if all other efforts have failed because they are costly to an company because a severance package must be provided for each person who has been fired. The evaluation will reveal that there is a significant difference in performance between the target performance and the current one. Corrective measures should be placed in place to account for the performance difference, and this may require some form of training
