Workplace training or on the job training is a very practical approach taken by organisations to introduce or update employee with utilising existing resources in the best way or introducing new concepts.
The advantages of workplace training are as follows:
1. One can understand the training in real work life since trainings are imparted to apply them in your daily work. In my bank some of the trainings like related to implementation of Information technology are imparted in the bank brach itself. Some expert faculty visit the designated branch to explain about the newly launched technology to all the staff members of the branch. Such training is extremely beneficial as all the staff of the branch can see the systems and thus will be more operational friendly.
This method ensures that all staff members receive the same training and implement it with ease. This method is very cost effective as it cuts down the cost of travelling all branch staff on a holiday to the training centre.
Disadvantage is the different level of staff have different job profile and giving the same training to all staff will be waste of resources. Also training in bank branch can be done on holidays or after bank hours only because during work hour there is huge customer footfall and regular work will get hampered.
The workplace training in a bank branch will be more effective if a separate training room is there wherein only the staff require for that training be called for without disturb in the regular branch work.
Major challenge of a workplace training is what training be imparted to which person.
The training module should be standardised I.e common for all who get trained.
Different people with generation gap may be in the same training so imparting of training should be such that no staff in the branch feels less eligible for understanding the training module.
The trainer should be able to keep all the members motivated to engage in the training so that a 100 percent engagement of all staff receiving training can be sought.
