Jonathan Kozol is asking for a change in this harmful isolation of students, which would incorporate more funding towards these underdeveloped schools. This calling is directed towards his audience of individuals who are interested in the topic of public education.
Kozol’s purpose of writing is more than just highlighting the issues at Fremont High school. The high school is just a small representation of the bigger apartheid. Kozol has drawn a picture of the mismanagement and the hopelessness growing among the students due to it. The school’s management is in a poor state and its environment is nowhere even close to being called comfortable for the students. Along with highlighting the mismanagement, Kozol has brought to light the helplessness of the young students who do not have an option. Mostly he has presented the facts related to the school’s state from the students’ angle. He also highlights stats highlighting population composition of these public schools.
