Computer network

Consider the high-speed Internet services available for a major metropolitan area with more than two million residents. Discuss what physical medium(s) should be used for providing residential Internet access, enterprise Internet access (at companies and schools), and public Internet access (at shopping malls, train stations etc.). Briefly justify your answers from both budget and quality of service factors. Note that there might be multiple correct answers to each of the questions.

Physical medium for networks:

  • Basically there are two major physical medium of networks. They are as follows:
    • Wired
      • Twisted pair
      • Co-axial cable
      • Fiber optics
    • Wireless
  • Now we will be discussing where and when to use these mediums to provide data communication to the certain domains. They are as follows:

Residential area:

  • In residential area we know that the budget is low and the requirement of Internet is not to high. So they can easily make use of average internet connection.
  • Hence, we can add up Wired connection here with co-axial cable so that there is proper data rates with good connection to be surfed.
  • As the activities that will be mostly done at such places will be either watching videos, surfing internet, accessing social network sites.,etc.
  • We can also make use of wireless networks as most of the ISP(Internet Service Provider) provides cheap connections which can be used here with high availability in the complete place.

Enterprise area:

  • The enterprise areas will have both the wired as well as the wireless connections. Mostly in the enterprise areas there are both one is restricted to only office use and the wireless connection is for other errands.
  • The wired connection is with the fiber optic cable so that there is no interference in the network and the work within the office is being performes very well.
  • While the other connection i.e. The wireless one will be used by the employees to do random stuff that will be occupying the main network bandwidth. Hence, they provide different network for this sort.

Public Internet:

  • It is probably the wireless network with high connectivity and range which makes it easy for people to connect to the network and access the internet.
  • It is mostly done by the government so the budget is good enough to setup such high requirements also it becomes good for the users to connect without getting disrupted by the network.
  • Hence, the public network are kept wireless for these reasons and as it is for welfare of the public it is never paid for the users which also inspires people to make use of it more.

Hence, these are the places where these physical mediums must be used so that they are placed well without any loss of budget and proper network signals.

There are two coal-fired power plants located in the vicinity of a major metropolitan area. These power plants emit sulphur dioxide, which causes respiratory issues for the metro population as well as resulting in acidic rainfall.  The EPA has determined that the amount of sulphur dioxide emitted needs to be reduced by 180 tons. The marginal abatement cost function for the first power plant is given by MC(x) = 5x and the marginal abatement cost function for the second power plant...
