Metropolitan Area Network or MAN is the bigger version of Local Area Network(LAN) and the technology used in MAN is very similar to technology used in LAN. MAN is used to connect numerous number of LAN networks into a larger network connectivity or it can be mapped into a single cable.MAN is basically oparated and supervised by a single private or public company.

Characteristics of MAN :

1. MAN covers towns and cities within 50 Km rangw.

2.Communication medium used for MAN is mainly Optical fibre which enhance the speed drastically.

3. Data rates adequate for distributed computing applications.

Advantages of MAN :

1.It is less expensive to attach MAN with Wide Area Network(WAN). MAN gives the good efficiency of data.In MAN data can be managed with ease in a centralized manner as it is controlled by a single system supervisor.

2.MAN encompasses several blocks of a city or an entire town.

3.Local transactions and file transfers can be done in unreal speed compared to othet network methodology.

4. MAN uses fibre optics so the speed of data can be upon 1000 Mbps which ensures high speed transactions and transfers.
