A 23.0 gram sample of a gas occupies 11.2 Liters of volume at standard temperature and pressure. The identity of this gas is mostly likely which of the following gases?
| A. |
 NO2 |
|
| B. |
 CS2 |
|
| C. |
 CH3F |
|
| D. |
 Ar |
|
| E. |
 CH2Cl2 |
From mole concept & Avogadro Law:- 22.4 Liters of any gas contains 1 mol of gas at Standard temperature pressure.
So 11.2 Liters of gas has = 1/2 mol of gas
Given that 11.2 Liters of gas has mass = 23 grams
That means 1/2 mol of gas has mass = 23 grams
So 1 mol of gas has mass = 23 x 2 = 46 grams
So the molar mass of unknown gas is equal to 46 grams
Now from options, NO2 has molar mass 46. So Unknown gas will be NO2 ( Nitrogen dioxide ).
