FLAIL CHEST

Flail chest is a life threatening is a condition in which segement of rib cage is broken followed by a trauma or blunt injury .In this one or more rib bone is fractured and is assosiated with considerable morbidity and mortality.In flail chest the part of rib cage is seperated from the chest wall followed by blunt trauma.This will severly affect the breathing,and thus the floting segment of the chest will move paradoxically in the opposite direction of the rib cage.

Pathophysiology - By the antomy flail chest is the fracture of rib bones,it can be assosiated with serious life threatening conditions suchs as arortic distruption,A flail chest segment can cause insuffiecient ventilation,and leads to furher complications,and impaired gas exchange.

SYMPTOMS

  • Severe pain in the chest.
  • Breathing difficulty.
  • Bruising
  • tenderness in the chest.
  • Paradoxical chest movement.

COMPLICATIONS.

  • Pnemothorax.-
  • Hemothorax.
  • Pulmonary contusion.
  • Pnemonia
  • Atelectasis.

The excessive movement of the broken chest wall cause insufficient ventilation as well as other complications.Patient cant't cough properly will leads to accumulation of tracheobronchial secretions with its sequel.

The pulmonary contusion produce atriovenous shunting and can alter alveolar ventilation perfusion.

cause hypoxemia and respiratory distress.
