What is an ion? Cation?Anion?
What is an atom?
What is an isomer?
What is pH?
1) Ions result from atoms or molecules that have gained or lost one or more valence electrons, giving them a positive or negative charge.
An anion is an ion that carries a negative charge, causing it to migrate to the anode (positive electrode) in electrolysis. Anions are nonmetals. A cation is an ion that carries a positive charge, causing it to migrate to the cathode (negative electrode) in a electrolysis. Cations are metals.
2) Atoms are defined as the smallest units of matter that have the properties of an individual element. Most of the atom is empty space. The rest consists of a positively charged nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons.
3)Isomers are molecules that have the same molecular formula, but have a different arrangement of the atoms in space. There are two major classes of isomers: structural isomers and stereoisomers. Example- butane and isobutane are strucural isomers.
4) pH is a measure of hydrogen ion concentration, a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The pH scale usually ranges from 0 to 14.
