What is lymphedema and what causes it? What are its symptoms and possible consequences?
Swelling in the lymph node of the arm and leg due to blockage of lymphatic flow is called as lymphedema. The predisposing factors of lymphedema is parasitic infections, after cancer therapy and also some genetic condition. The area affected with lymphedema is associated with high risk of infection and ulcerative lesions due to stasis of lymph flow. The most common symptom include swelling and edema. Other symptoms include pain, discomfort, increased coloration etc. The consequence of lymphedema results due to long standing cases of lymph node swelling and it may cause cellulitis, lymphadinitis and skin ulcers. The symptoms causes discomfort of the patient and may results in psychological stress. Treatment include lymphatic massage and bandage application at the affected areas to relieve the blockage of lymph nodes.
