1. List the mechanisms of evolution and how each affects genetic diversity.

The mechanisms of evolution were Natural Selection, Mutations, genetic drift, and Gene flow.

2. What are the conditions that must be met in order for the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium Principle to exist within a population?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer :

1)

Natural Selection - It increases or decreases frequency of alleles that already exist in a population. That is how it contributes to genetic diversity.

Mutation - mutation alters the genetic constitution of the organisms. This makes population high genetically diverse.

Genetic drift - The changes in relative allele frequency causes genetic drift. This adds to genetic variation of population. The well known example is influenza virus. The drift and shift makes it difficult to develop vaccines.

Gene flow - Gene flow allows transfer of genetic diversity among populations and introduce new variations to the population.

2)

The conditions for Hardy Weinberg equilibrium to be set in a population are

  • No mutation
  • No gene flow
  • Large population size
  • Random mating
  • No natural selection.
